Awareness Camp on Waste Management at Sera Jey Monastic University - 13 Aug 2010.

Waste if not managed effectively is not only unaesthetic but can lead to diseases, pollution of land, water, air and loss of natural resources. The objective of waste management is to reduce the quantity of waste disposed by recovery of materials and energy in a cost effective and environment friendly manner.

Segregation or separation of wastes at source into wet, dry, hazardous and biomedical wastes is the first and the most important step in waste management. This can be achieved through educating the community.

As a start, the usage of plastic bags in Sera Jhe Monastery has been phased out from 6th July 2010. Sera Jhe Health Care Committee has produced 5000 cloth bags and same number of paper bags, so that the customers need not use plastics to carry their purchases.

On 13th August 2010 Sera Jhe Health Care Committee invited Mr Lobsang Dorjee la to give a talk on awareness of waste segregation, management and ill effects of mismanaged waste to health and environment. The main emphasis is on the reduction of waste from the source which would minimize amount of wastes to a great extend.
